Weaves and Food Toy

Check out Susan's blog for today. She talks about why it is important not to toss food except in the early stages of 2x2 training AND she addresses how to use a food tug.

Peggy tried one yesterday and had great success as evidenced in the video below. Look at the distance from the poles that she started Gem and was still able to toss a food toy! It's time for Julie and Christy to switch to a food toy. Be sure the reward you are using is something the dog really likes! I switch the food treat often. Who wants to eat steak every day?!

Clockwise in the photo: the food disc, mesh tug it, a retrieve toy and a tug toy. I am currently using the food disc for 2x2 training. After three weeks of weave training using the food disc I have noticed Coffee sometimes grabs it when I ask her to jump on me. YEAH! Separately I have been working Coffee on a toy retrieve and that toy often varies. I also work on tugging with a braided tug. Coffee is very soft mouthed when it comes to tugging with me.

I have the Tug It! mesh toy Susan mentions. I will introduce Coffee to it this week and let you know how our training goes.

Should I be switching Kerry from a food toy to a tug toy or maybe switch back and forth?

Jennifer, If Kerry likes to tug you can switch to it and back and forth. When I work a difficult entry with Echo I'll pull out the food disc because it has more value for her. Being able to reward with multiple toys is a good thing.
